We'd like to introduce the Edo-Kirigami artist, Shinichi Nakayama.
Shinichi Nakayama (b. 1971) was born in Yanaka, a downtown area of traditional Tokyo when the city was still known as Edo.
He studied fine arts in Paris, and now lives and works in Tokyo.
While focusing largely on acrylic painting, he has been developing his own kirigami projects since 2008.
"Kirigami" means "paper cutout" in Japanese, and is considered a variation of origami. Since kirigami is made by folding a piece of paper and cutting the base, it is usually symmetrical. But Nakayama's works often incorporate asymmetrical elements.
His artwork is inspired by Japanese myths and folk stories.Since he was born in "Edo" and his works are in the "Edo"-style, he refers to himself as "the Edo-Kirigami" artist. His reputation within Japan is built up numerous exhibitions of his kirigami works in Harajuku, Ginza, Tokyo Station, and Nezu. His works can be purchased Shinjuku station and Edo-Tokyo museum.
A variety of kirigami cards and bookmarks are on display in IKOI.The bookmarks consist of two elements: a print and the original kirigami paper, called "Isekatagami", which is used to make the print and is made from paper typically used for stenciling kimono patterns.
Nakayama will hold an exhibition of his kirigami works and his related paintings at IKOI in Amsterdam in September 2010.
