Daisuke Nishijima

Daisuke Nishijima made his debut with the full-length original comic Ōson Sensō
(“The Universal”, Hayakawa Publishing) released in 2004 as part of the Hayakawa SF
Series J Collection. That year, it was recognized as a Jury Recommended Work in the 2004 [8th] Japan Media Arts Festival, and received the Seiun Award for best work of art.

In 2005, Daisuke published the original comic Sekai no Owari no Mahoutsukai (“The Witch at the End of the World”, Kawade Shobo Shinsha), which later was extended into a series. Daisuke’s other works include Atmosphere 1 and 2 (Hayakawa Publishing), Koi ni Ochita Akuma: Sekai no Owari no Mahou Tsukai II (“Devil in Love: The Witch at the End of the World II”, Kawade Shobo Shinsha), and Doyōbi no Jikkenshitsu: Shi to Hyōka to Ato Nanika (“Saturday Laboratory: Poems, Critiques, and Other Bits”, INFAS Publications).

Daisuke’s present main outlet is a critically acclaimed reflection on the Vietnam war entitled Điện Biên Phủ and published in the manga magazine, Monthly Ikki (Shogakukan).

Daisuke is also a prolific writer of essays and comics under his alias Mangacchi, and is active in the music scene under the moniker DJ Mahoutsukai.

Meet Manga-chi

Birthed in the early 00’s, Manga-chi is a self-portrait/alter-ego of its creator, manga artist Daisuke Nishijima. A paragon of Japanese kawaii culture, Manga-chi’s Hello Kitty-ish ubercute looks have spawned a minor subculture of Manga-chi fans.

Manga-chi appears as the main character of various manga essays serialized in magazines, and in 2008 was featured as the main character of the “New Life Starts with the Post Office” campaign at the request of the Japan Post Group. Beginning this fall, Manga-chi will appear in segue animation for Fuji Television’s widely famous Smap x Smap program.

As if Manga-chi were not busy enough already, this year he collaborates on the Ikoi Project, for which a life-size Manga-chi figure was produced by the Good Smile Company. He proudly made his international debut in France at Japan Expo 2009, a yearly event frequented by 130,000 visitors. Manga-chi was given a warm welcome by the aesthetically sharp French, who saluted him with cries of “Kawaii!”. Viva Manga-chi!
